A World Renowned Tropical Ecosystem Research
La Selva’s a biological station operated by The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS). And working on education, conservation, ecotourism, and research. Known as one of the worlds most important sites for tropical ecosystem research, holding over 450 bird species and 70 species of bats, this Biological station is sure to provide you with all the birding education, experience and opportunities you can imagine. La Selva has around 1600 acres of tropical forest, holding uncountable species of wildlife and vegetation for you to explore. Located at the Caribbean site of Costa Rica, about 1.5 hours drive away from San Jose. It is an enormously important site for tropical ecosystem research. Every year scientists and students from all over the world come here to study.
Lodging at La Selva Biological Station
The projects at the station focus in particular on biodiversity, forest dynamics, nutrient cycling, native species reforestation and carbon sequestering. The accommodations offered at the station are cabins with twin beds, fan, bathroom and own balcony. There are also bigger houses for families with two bedrooms and featuring even a kitchen. Moreover, there are dorms with shared bathrooms available. The meals come scheduled and enjoyed all together. There are options for vegetarians and lunch boxes also available.
Guided tours through the rainforest
La Selva Biological Station features a gift shop, a library, and an academic center. Daily guided-tours offered through the tropical rainforest on the 35 miles (57 km) of trails. These tours can be half or full day, and the guides are naturalists who can tell you a lot about the species found, the history of the rainforest and the research done here. The trails are well maintained and suitable for people of any age. However, there are some only for people who are physically fit.
Activities offered by the Biological Station
Due to the high variety of birds found here, there is also the possibility to make bird watching tours early in the morning. They need to be reserved in advance also guided by naturalists who take you to different parts of the forest. It is also possible to participate in the workshop and learn how to spot birds and how to identify them by their colors, behavior, and habitat. You can also stay here as part of an even bigger birding adventure. Another possibility is to do a night tour where you can spot many different animals that are active when it is dark. For people interested in the natural history of La Selva it is possible to set up a lecture on the topic.
